PDF [1142,5 KB]  From [www.leukemia-lymphoma.org]  Last viewed: 07.09.2006
Page 2 page 1 It is a disease that starts in the marrow. The marrow – the spongy tissue found in the center of the bone – is the part of the body that makes red and white blood cells. In myeloma , one type of developing white blood cell (B lymphocyte), called a plasma cell, grows continuously to form a mass, or tumor, in the marrow. • When there are too many plasma cells, they crowd out developing, normal white and red blood cells. • The plasma cells in myeloma make factors that cause bone to dissolve, leading to fractures. • Fewer red blood cells result in less oxygen being carried to the tissue throughout the body, causing fatigue and shortness of breath with exercise. • Fewer white blood cells make it harder to fight infection. Myeloma is a type of cancer This booklet is designed to provide information in regard to the subject matter covered. ...

Don Baylor Former MLB All-Star, AL MVP and Multiple Myeloma Survivor Former MLB All-Star, AL MVP and multiple myeloma survivor Don Baylor is a new member of the Strike Out Cancer team. As a cancer survivor, family caregiver, and a former player, manager and coach, Baylor knows the benefits of a team approach both on and off the field. He encourages all cancer patients to build their own team of healthcare professionals, support services and loved ones. Born in Austin, Texas, Baylor was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1967 amateur draft by Baltimore. Baylor was known for crowding the plate, and set a new major league career record for being hit by pitches in 1987 (breaking Ron Hunt's modern-day record of 243), finishing his career with 267. That record stood until it was broken in 2005. During his 19-year playing career, Baylor was a power hitter who played for six American League teams: the Baltimore Orioles, ...

Living Successfully with Multiple Myeloma By Peter Tischler North Texas Myeloma Support Group by Peter Tischler I’m not the smartest guy around and, to be honest, I’d guess that many people in our group are smarter than me. But I’m very good at one thing: I can absorb an enormous amount of data, condense it into a summary, and communicate the results of that data to other people in such a way that they will understand it. That’s what I did in business and that’s what I’ve been doing with information about myeloma . Mostly, I do this one-on-one when people ask for help. This editorial is an attempt to reach a larger audience of people with our disease. When I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) and was led to believe that I would only be around for a few years, I thought about what I wanted from medical science. I decided that I wanted quality of life and a chance to ...

The experimental compound, NPI-0052, has been found to block or inhibit cancer cells’ proteasomes from working effectively. The proteasome work as a cell’s “garbage disposal,” chewing up and disposing of old, unwanted proteins. With their proteasome jammed, cells die from the backup of damaged proteins. ...

Bone marrow transplants typically include high-dose chemotherapy (HDC). "High-dose chemotherapy" (HDC) involves the administration of cytotoxic agents for the treatment of can- cer. It uses doses several times greater than the standard therapeutic dose. In some cases, whole body or localized radiotherapy is also given and is included in the term HDC. The rationale for HDC is that many cytotoxic agents act according to a steep dose-response curve . Thus, small increments ...

CASE REPORT Multiple Myeloma Involving the Cricoid Cartilage Giorgio Peretti, MD, Cesare Piazza, MD, Loredana Provenzano, MD, Marco Giudice, MD, Brescia, Italy M ultiple myeloma (MM) is 1 of the 3 clinical entities in which plasma cell dyscrasias may appear in the head and neck. The other 2 forms are represented by extramed- ullary (EMP) and solitary bone plasmacytomas (SBP). Such types of plasma cell lesions are histologically indistinguish- able from each other, thus representing distinct manifesta- tions of a continuous pathologic spectrum. 1 Therefore, an appropriate differential diagnosis rests solely on clinical findings. In particular, MM localized to the larynx is defined as a plasma cell tumor that involves the marrow space formed after osseous metaplasia of the laryngeal cartilages occurring in the elderly, associated with signs of systemic ...

National Cancer Institute SEER Program 88 MULTIPLE MYELOMA M ultiple myeloma , sometimes called plasma cell myeloma , arises in bone marrow and involves the plasma cells, a type of blood cell that normally plays a crucial role in the immune response by producing antibodies. It is classified as a lymphoproliferative disease and is therefore related to the lymphomas. In some early classification schemes, multiple myelomas were included in statistics on lymphomas. There is considerable variation in the incidence of the disease. Among men, age- adjusted incidence rates (per 100,000) range from a low of 1.6 among Japanese to a high of 11.3 among blacks, a seven-fold difference. This difference is particularly interesting since the opposite relationship holds for Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone tumor that is extremely rare among ...
