PDF [93,7 KB]  From [147.52.72.117]  Last viewed: 30.07.2004
Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate gene expression changes in disseminated neuroblastoma by cDNA array technique. Three stage IV neuroblastomas and one neuroblastoma cell line (SK-N-FI) were analyzed. Expression profiles were confirmed by semiquantitative RT-PCR and in some instances by Northern blotting. Comparison of expression profiles identified several genes which were highly expressed as well as some which were down-regulated in tumor samples relatively to SK-N-FI cells. The tumors studied lacked N- myc overexpression, while showing up-regulation of basic trans-cription factors, growth factors and receptors such as NSEP, c-myc binding protein MM1, thymosin ß10 (TMSB10), TNF-R superfamily member 10A (TNFRSF10A) and FZ9. These results suggest that cDNA array technology is a powerful tool to identify a set of genes involved in neuroblastoma genesis and progression. ...

Szutowicz Chair of Clinical Biochemistry, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Medical University of Gdansk, Poland Particular susceptibility of cholinergic neurons to neurodegenerative insults may result from the fact that they require extra amounts of choline and acetyl-CoA for acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis. Cholinergic hybrid neuroblastoma SN56 cells of septal origin display several features of septal cholinergic neurons but express relatively low choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity. To restore ChAT activity similar to that present in brain cholinergic neurons, native SN56 cells were transfected with plasmid PSRNEO containing rat cDNA ChAT and geneticin resistance gene. Stable transfection yielded cells (SN56ChAT) with ChAT ...

I78 NEUROBLASTOMA SCREENING STUDY ENABLES ADEQUATE DECISION ON FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF LEGISLATIVE EARLY DETECTION PROGRAMME B. Metzinger, IKK-Bundesverband (Bergisch Gladbach) Studies about the effectiveness of screening are rare and far between in Germany. Realization of such studies usually is declined because of alleged ethical reasons. Consequently screening examinations are executed without previous effectiveness checks and quality management. Especially examinations in healthy individuals require evidence for their benefit. Necessarily the risk (including the risk of further examination) vs. benefit (better prognosis for early detected diseases) have to be weighed. The pilot project " Neuroblastoma screening" is a positive example for the intention of all persons concerned realizing a study to proove the benefit of a screening test. The result of the project answers the question whether screening ...

!"#$ P O ! VP S NMU ABSTRACT A child with neuroblastoma was hospitalized due to fever on November 6, 2003. During the hospitalization (11/06/ 2003-12/06/2003), the peripheral stem cells were collected from this child. The caring duration of the author was from November 20, 2003 through November 26, 2003. This article describes the medical and nursing interventions imple- mented for solving this child's health problems. As Gordon's 11 Functional Health Assessment served as an assessment guide, four health problems, such as risk for infection, altered oral mucous membrane, hyperthermia, and pain, were identified. In order to solve four health problems mentioned above, nursing goals were first identified and nursing inter- ventions were then implemented. After evaluating the nursing care planed for this child, four health problems were either improved or solved. This care experience may provide health ...

PDF [68,3 KB]  From [documents.cancer.org]  Last viewed: 25.07.2004
NEUROBLASTOMA - All Sections NEUROBLASTOMA What Is Cancer? Cancer is a group of many related diseases. All forms of cancer cause cells in the body to change and grow in an abnormal way. Normal body cells divide and grow in an orderly fashion. But cancer cells divide and grow out of control. This out-of-control growth damages normal body tissues and disrupts the ability of organs to function as they should. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until adult size is reached. After that, normal cells of most tissues divide only to replace worn-out tissue and to repair injuries. Cancer cells, however, continue to grow. Often the cells form tumors (lumps) that compress, invade, and destroy normal tissue. Unless the cancer is treated, the tumors can grow and spread. If cells break away from such a tumor, they can travel through the bloodstream or ...

  [860] Misdiagnosis of olfactory neuroblastoma
PDF [131,1 KB]  From [www.aans.org]  Last viewed: 25.07.2004
Olfactory neuroblastomas are relatively uncommon tu- mors that originate from the olfactory epithelium in the upper nasal cavity in the region of the cribriform plate. Although some controversy persists, their primary modal- ity of therapy is resection, usually performed by an an- terior craniofacial approach and with the provision of ad- juvant radiation therapy. 29 In addition, recent experience suggests that there may be a therapeutic role for adjuvant chemotherapy. 4 A variety of other neoplastic lesions occur in the same anatomical region as ONs. Tumors such as NEC, melanoma, sinonasal lymphoma, SNUC, and pitu- itary adenoma can all present with similar clinical, histo- logical, and radiological features as ON. The prognosis and therapeutic modalities for these different tumors are variable, and physicians treating neoplasms arising from the paranasal sinus region ...

Letter to the Editor Expression of the caspase-8 gene in neuroblastoma cells is regulated through an essential interferon- sensitive response element (ISRE) Cell Death and Differentiation (2004) 11, 131–134. doi: 10.1038/ sj.cdd.4401327 Published online 7 November 2003 Dear Editor, It is well known that caspase-8 is an ‘initiator’ caspase acting at the top of the apoptotic cascade. 1–3 Specific ligand engagement by death receptors of the TNF-R superfamily or CD95/FAS induces receptor aggregation and recruitment of the Fas-associated death domain and caspase-8 mole- cules. 4,5 Thus, caspase-8 becomes activated and further activates, by enzymatic cleavage, the downstream ‘effector’ caspases. 6,7 The silencing of caspase-8 gene was observed in several tumors, where it was related to resistance to death- inducing ligands, ...

Abstract. Thalidomide has previously been shown to have anti- angiogenic properties. More recently, clinical efficacy of this agent has been demonstrated in multiple myeloma and prostate cancer. Neuroblastoma is the most frequent solid tumor of the abdomen of childhood, yet children with this disease frequently have metastases at presentation. Such patients have a very poor prognosis with current therapies. Thus, new approaches are needed. We have previously shown that VEGF antagonists can inhibit neoangiogenesis and tumor growth in experimental neuroblastoma . In this study, we investigated the anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor properties of thalidomide in a xenograft model of human neuroblastoma . Tumors were induced in athymic mice using the human neuroblastoma cell line NGP. Intraperitoneal thalidomide (100 mg/kg/dose) or vehicle was administered beginning one week after implantation, ...

Section 4 – Your Child’s Diagnosis – Neuroblastoma Page 1 of 3 Neuroblastoma What is a Neuroblastoma ? Neuroblastoma is a tumour that begins in nerve tissues in the neck, chest, abdomen, or pelvis. About 50% of neuroblastomas start in the tissues of the adrenal glands located just above the kidneys. Often this tumour has spread before it is diagnosed. The common sites are the lymph nodes, liver, bones, and bone marrow. Neuroblastoma occurs in early childhood with 2/3 of the children younger than 5 years of age when they are diagnosed. Some neuroblastomas in infants can spontaneously regress and your doctor will discuss this with you. What causes a neuroblastoma ? As with most cancers, the cause of neuroblastoma is unknown. What are the signs and symptoms? The symptoms will vary depending on where the tumour is located. The most common ...

15 Cadmium-Induced Apoptosis in MES 23.5 Mouse Neuroblastoma Cells Presenter Wei-Wei Cheng Collaborators Li-xin Liu, Angela Gentles, Jean Strhlendrof, Louise Chiodo and Ernest Smith, Texas Tech University Department Cell and Molecular Biology Abstract Exposure to the heavy metal, cadmium (Cd2+), has been linked to adverse environmental and human health effects. The present studies addressed the mechanisms of Cd2+-induced cell death in the mouse neuroblastoma X rat mesencephalon (MES-23.5) wild type cell line. Toxicity initially was indexed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenytetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay following exposure to Cd2+ (1-10_M) for 7 to 72 h. Cell death was observed to be both concentration- and time-dependent. The highest concentration resulted in 100% cell death following 72 h exposure via the culture medium. We directly evaluated ...
