INTRODUCTION
Neuroblastoma is a biologically very special neoplasm that is unique to child-
hood. As can be seen from Table 1 it is the fourth most common paediatric
malignancy in the Nordic countries and constitutes around 6% of all
malignancies in children.

Molecular biology has revolutionized the medicine and added a new
dimension to our knowledge of disease processes, especially in the
field of oncology. Proto oncogenes are proteins normally present in
the genome and they may be converted to oncogenes by mutations,
rearrangements, translocation and deletion. One such
protooncogene is the N-myc proto-oncogene seen in
neuroblastoma . Amplification of the N-myc oncogene identifies a
group of patients who have a poor prognosis. At present, it is
generally agreed that the amplification of N-myc is still the most
important prognostic factor to be investigated in every patient with
neuroblastoma because of it’s reliability as a prognostic indicator.
There are many conventional ...

EPIDEMIOLOGY IN THE GERMAN NEUROBLASTOMA SCREENING PROJECT
C. Spix, Dt. Kinderkrebsregister, Joh.Gutenberg Universität (Mainz)
In Germany Neuroblastoma is the most frequent extracranial solid childhood tumor. Its properties made it seem
an ideal candidate for screening.
The German childhood cancer registry was involved in the project as epidemiological consultant and to ensure
ascertainment of cases and deaths. A complete registry, which determines the incidence, age at diagnosis, stage
distribution, and mortality in all relevant groups (control area and study area, participants and non participants)
independently of the study and beyond the field phase of the study is an optimal basis for the evaluation of a
screening study.
Ascertainment was achieved by regular stochastic record linkage of encrypted personal identifier data from all
1.5 million study participants with the registry data at the ...

Childhood Cancer: Neuroblastoma
The purpose of this information guide is to help parents of children newly diagnosed with Neuroblastoma find
sources of information and support. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to provide starting
points for information seeking. The materials can be found at the Patient Education Resource Center at the
University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in room B1-361.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING IN NEUROBLASTOMA
Hans Ringertz, M.D., Ph.D.
INTRODUCTION
Neuroblastoma is a biologically very special neoplasm that is unique to child-
hood. As can be seen from Table 1 it is the fourth most common paediatric
malignancy in the Nordic countries and constitutes around 6% of all
malignancies in children.

Budget: Vol. I, page 153
Specific Aims
Define biologic features which correlate with pathogenesis and progression
Improve survival by overcoming tumor resistance
Improve health-related outcome
3 Major Accomplishments
Improved risk stratification with reduction of therapy in lower-risk patients and intensification in high-risk.
Demonstration of a significant advantage of purged ABMT compared to chemotherapy in a randomized trial, as well as improvement in survival for stage 4 >1 year of age.
Implementation of novel biological therapies with demonstration of a significant benefit of 13-cis-retinoic acid for minimal residual disease in a randomized trial
