To find out more about ovarian cancer go to http://ovariancancer.jhmi.edu
It is time we stop the loss of mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and girlfriends from ovarian cancer so I
have decided to do something about it. On September 16-19, 2004, I will be climbing in the HERA
Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life. I will be climbing in recognition of my friend Sean Patrick who has been
fighting this disease for 7 years and for all of the women battling this disease and the 25,500 women who
will be newly diagnosed this year. Can I count on your support?
The money raised will go directly to support research for early detection of ovarian cancer and new
directions in treatment and to aide women and their families battling this disease as well as to support
awareness and wellness programs.
On the research front, our most pressing task is to develop a reliable early detection test for ovarian
cancer ...

screening is notoriously unreliable: a positive result often does not indicate disease, and a negative result

report of a new blood test for ovarian cancer , a cancer which is almost invariably fatal unless caught at a
very early stage. This test is able to detect ovarian cancer in every single case. Nevertheless, the author
says, “[] surprisingly, the ability to find all cases of cancer is not the best way to judge the value of a

Ovarian cancer is the rapid growth of
abnormal cells in the ovaries of the female
reproductive system. The ovaries are the
two small egg-filled sacs on each side of the
uterus which produce estrogen and play a key
role in conception and menstruation. Cancer
can occur in one or both ovaries. When there
is a malignancy, the ovaries typically enlarge,
and cancer cells may fall off the ovary’s
surface and implant themselves throughout
the abdominal cavity. Each one of these
seedlings can then grow into a separate
ovarian cancer tumor nodule.
Who is at risk for ovarian cancer ?
Each year, more than 20,000 American
women will be diagnosed with ovarian
cancer . The disease most often affects post-
menopausal women, although women of any
age may develop it. While scientists have not

WVU Puts Idle Computers to Work Against Ovarian Cancer
Researchers at West Virginia University's Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and Parabon Computation, Inc., a leading distributed computing company, announced today a breakthrough discovery about one of the deadliest types of ovarian cancer - clear cell carcinoma.
Some cancers, like clear cell carcinoma, are resistant to chemotherapy treatments. To better understand how this resistance takes place, Cancer Center scientists developed databases of certain genes within ovarian cancer tissues. From this data, they studied DNA repair genes, which control whether or not a tumor will respond to chemotherapy. Two of these genes were ERCC1 and XPB.
Parabon analyzed the data, using state-of-the-art statistical techniques and the massive computing resources available from the company's distributed computing solution, ...

ABSTRACT
Unlike for other types of cancers, there are no tests suit-
able for mass screening that will reliably detect cases of
ovarian cancer . The most commonly used test in clinical
environments is the test for the tumour marker CA 125,
with an accuracy of only up to 70%. Research so far has
mostly focused on predicting the risk of malignancy of
pelvic masses, using operator-dependent ultrasound charac-
teristics. In this paper, we examine the use of standardized ...

We evaluated the occurrence of acute

cancer who were treated in five randomized clinical trials.
Of the 1399 women, 998 had been treated with

ANL was not observed in 401 women who had
