* Today?s RTC topic is on ovarian and testicular cancers only. Most ovarian tumors are benign, but these will not be addressed in this handout.
I. BIOLOGY OF OVARIAN CANCER :
There are three main types of ovarian cancer :
Epithelialovarian cancer - Most common type of ovarian tumor (80%). It arises from the epithelial cells of the ovary and pelvic cavity (that?s why bilateral oopherectomy does not completely eliminate the possibility of developing ovarian cancer in people with family history of this condition).
Ovarian germ cell tumors-Accounts for 5% of ovarian cancers and they tend to occur in girls and young women. They arise from the seed cells that form the eggs. Most ...

he discoveries of BRCA1 and
BRCA2, genes associated
with hereditary breast can-
cer, were hailed as among the most
significant advances in modern
medical science. It quickly became
evident that these same genes con-
tributed to hereditary ovarian can-
cer. Soon after they were cloned,
testing for mutations in BRCA1 (lo-
cated on autosome 17) and BRCA2
(located on autosome 13) became
available (Figure 1). Only an esti-

to 10% of ovarian cancers are
hereditary.

What Is Cancer ?
Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are
many kinds of cancer , they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.
Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's
life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most
parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries.
Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of
dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.
Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This substance is in every cell and directs all its
activities. Most of the time when DNA becomes damaged, either the ...

PhD Thesis:
Ovarian function and uterine characteristics in long-term survivors of childhood
cancer .
By Elisabeth C. Larsen MD, PhD
The Ph.D. thesis includes a review and 4 papers. The project was carried out at the
Fertility Clinic, Rigshospitalet in the period from 2000 to 2003.
The aim of the project was to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the
reproductive late adverse effects that may occur following treatment of a malignancy in
childhood.
One hundred adult female survivors of childhood cancer and 21 controls of
similar age participated in the research program. All patients had received radiotherapy
and/or chemotherapy.
Seventeen patients had developed ovarian failure following the anti-neoplastic
treatment. Thirteen patients used oral contraception. Examination of 70 patients with
spontaneous menstrual cycles revealed endocrine and sonographic evidence ...
