Preoperative Ml&Staging of Patients with Pancreatic Cancer E. Castillo,MD, U. Fischer,MD, B. Salamat,MD, 0. Horstmann,MD*, E. Grabbe MD. Departments of Radiology and General Surgery*, Georg-August-Universitit mingen, Germany Purpose: to evaluate the role of a single MRI evaluation for a complete preoperative evaluation of patients with suspected pancreatic cancer . Material and Methods: 55 consecutive patients (19 female, 36 male) with suspicion of pancreatic malignancy were preoperatively examined with MRI during a 1 l-month period. All examinations were performed with a 1.5T imager (Magnetom Vision; Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) with use of a phased-array body coil. Imaging consisted of the following pulse sequences: 1) axial breath-hold Tl-weighted gradient recalled-echo (fast low-angle shot, FLASH) without fat suppression and T2- weighted fat suppressed ...

Kryuchina   Bohomolets National Medical University, Kyiv, Ukraine Kyiv Center for liver, biliary tracts and pancreas surgery, Kyiv, Ukraine.        Introduction      In the developed countries, pancreas cancer ranks fifth of all the tumors and second of digestive system tumors. Common disease incidence is 2 to 3 % of common oncological one, and the mortality rate is 4 to 5 %. Compared to other tumor localizations, the results on pancreatic cancer treatment are among the worst. Thus, half of the patients die in the period of 4 to 6 months after being diagnosed, and a five year survival is never more than 3%.[1].      The absence of early pathognomonic symptoms ...

N ew research from Canada suggests that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help prevent pancreatic cancer , a particularly deadly type of tumor, Reuters said. The findings, based on a comparison of 585 pancreatic cancer patients and about 4,779 adults without the disease, suggest that the risk of the cancer declines as fruit and veg- etable intake increases. Among cancers, pancreatic tumors have one of the most dismal survival rates, with less than 5 percent of patients still alive 5 years after diagnosis. The poor prognosis is in large part due to the fact that the disease is rarely caught early. Because of this, uncovering the modifiable risk factors for the disease is vital, according to Dr. Parviz Ghadirian of the University of Montreal, one of the authors of the new study. Using data from a large study of Canadians diagnosed with cancer between 1994 and 1997, Ghadirian ...

Phase III Study of PANVAC™-VF for Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer Title: A Phase III Randomized,Controlled Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of PANVAC-VF in Combination with GM-CSF Versus Best Supportive Care or Palliative Chemotherapy in Patients with Metastatic (Stage IV) Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreas Who Have Failed a Gemcitibine-Containing Chemotherapy Regimen Primary Endpoint: Overall survival (OS),a logrank test will be performed to compare OS in the vaccine arm in combination with GM-CSF versus best supportive care or palliative chemotherapy (investigator’s choice) in patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Secondary Endpoints: 1.Quality of life parameters; 2.Change in serum CEA and CA19-9 levels; 3.Response rate; 4.Safety. PANVAC™-VF: PANVAC-VF is an investigational cancer vaccine. The vaccine was developed based on the theory that a T- ...

[448] Molecular mechanisms of PTHrPs growth regulation of pancreatic cancer
PDF [10,3 KB]  From [www.cancer.ucsd.edu]  Last viewed: 06.07.2006
P.I.: Michael Bouvet, M.D. Title: Molecular Mechanisms of PTHrP’s Growth Regulation of Pancreatic Cancer PTHrP is an oncoprotein that regulates the growth and differentiation in virtually every cell and tissue studied. We have recently demonstrated that PTHrP is commonly expressed by pancreatic adenocarcinomas, the fourth leading cause of adult cancer deaths in the US, and in preliminary studies that PTHrP regulates tumor growth. The biological effects of PTHrP are both endocrine and intracrine, the former mediated through a cell-surface receptor and the latter through a nuclear localizing sequence (NLS). It is our Hypothesis that PTHrP mediates its growth regulatory effects in pancreatic cancer through both cell-surface receptor and nuclear localization intracrine mechanisms. Our goals are to elucidate these mechanisms by molecular biology studies and to identify the growth-influencing ...
