July 17, 2003 — The combination of cisplatin (CIS), gemcitabine (GEM), interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-
CSF), and fever-range, long-duration whole-body hyperthermia (FR-WBH) is safe, well tolerated, and offers clinical benefit to patients with pancreatic cancer or
neuroendocrine neoplasia, according to a presentation on July 14 at the 94th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) held in
Washington, D.C.
"The exciting implication of our phase I study is that FR-WBH increases the clinical effectiveness of optimally combined CIS, GEM and ...

Pancreatic cancer remains a cancer with poor survival prospects. For males
there has been no change in incidence or mortality over the last 20 years, and for
females there has been only a slight increase in both measures.

ABSTRACT
Pancreatic cancer still represents a serious medical concern for
which no adequate solution has thus far been found. Surgery is
the only appropriate therapy, but has a survival rate of around 30-
35% at three years, with an operative mortality below 3% and an
operative morbidity approaching 10% of radically resected pa-
tients, all of which applies to surgery performed by expert teams
in highly experienced sites.

The Cancer Research Society (CRS) is proud and honoured to invite grant applications
for the first CRS/Rob Lutterman Pancreatic Cancer Research Grant.
The funding for this grant has been raised through the Rob Lutterman Memorial Fund.
The fund was created in memory of Rob Lutterman, who passed away in 1999 of
pancreatic cancer at the age of sixty-three. Family, friends, and valued members of the
community created a fund to honour his memory. He was a generous man who
contributed greatly to the community. This fund is a tribute to his expansive spirit. The
majority of funds are raised through the annual Rob Lutterman Ski for a Cure Day,
though the fund is open year round. The goal of this grant is to provide targeted funding

Molecular changes in Chronic Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer
To summarize, the pathogenesis of pain, tissue destruction, inflammation and fibrosis in CP is
better understood today than ever before. Recent advances in cellular molecular biology have
revealed complex interactions between inflammatory cells and pancreatic parenchyma cells as
well as alterations in nerves. It is now clear that nerve changes, well studied and observed in
alcoholic CP for over a decade, are also similar in other forms of CP such as tropical and ...

5 Making cancer cells die a ‘good death’
I
t is not a distinction to be envied, but cancer this year
became the number one cause of death for Americans
under the age of 85, surpassing heart disease, which
today claims half as many lives as it did in the 1930s.
Though the statistics are staggering – nearly 1.4 million
cancer diagnoses a year in this country, and nearly 600,000
deaths – cancer ’s “ascendance” to the top of the mortality

New therapies are urgently needed for all stages of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. We have developed
a novel gene-modified whole cell allogeneic vaccine strategy for activating antitumor immune
responses. Pre-clinical models have demonstrated that tumor cells genetically modified to secrete the
cytokine granulocyte/macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) can generate potent, T cell-
dependent, systemic antitumor immunity. We tested in our initial phase I trial two allogeneic GM-CSF
secreting pancreatic vaccine cell lines integrated with chemoradiotherapy in 14 patients ...
