Suite 131 El Segundo, CA 90245 Submitted to the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee By Ms. Julie Fleshman President & CEO PanCAN on April 15, 2005 Dear Chairman Regula and Colleagues: Every 17 minutes someone in the United States dies of pancreatic cancer . This year, over 32,180 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 31,800 will die from this disease. The 99% mortality rate for pancreatic cancer remains the highest of all cancers, and the average life expectancy is three to six moths after diagnosis with metastatic disease. There are no early detection programs, effective treatments or cures for pancreatic cancer . At a time when so much progress is being made in medical ...

F ungi native to East Africa could be used as a new tool in the fight against malaria, recent studies suggest. According to BBC News website, an international team of scientists from the Netherlands, Tanzania and the UK say their technique could significantly reduce malaria cases. Their research has been presented at the Fourth pan-African Malaria Conference in Yaounde, Cameroon. When fungi infect cer- tain insects, including malaria-carrying mosqui- toes, they grow and quick- ly kill the animal. New studies show that a specific type of fungus native to East Africa can infect mosquitoes and reduce their lifespan by two-thirds - to just seven days. Professor Willem Takken from Wageningn University in the Netherlands said the fun- gus also stops live mosqui- toes from transmitting ...

[67] Screening for Pancreatic Cancer: A Brief Evidence Update
PDF [127,8 KB]  From [www.ahrq.gov]  Last viewed: 07.09.2006
Methods The MEDLINE ® and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for articles dating from 1994 through December 2001, focusing on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cost-effectiveness analyses, editorials, or commentaries concerning the critical key questions. The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ was also searched for guidelines on this topic. In the MEDLINE search, pancreatic cancer and mass screening were exploded, combining these searches with RCT terms. A second search used treatment (including chemotherapy and surgery) in place of screening. Studies of test accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) regarding screening for pancreatic cancer were also searched for. Key Questions and Results 1. Is there new direct evidence that screening provides more benefit than harm? We examined ...

PDF [131,8 KB]  From [www.ahrq.gov]  Last viewed: 07.09.2006
Summary of Recommendation The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against routine screening for pancreatic cancer in asymptomatic adults using abdominal palpation, ultrasonography, or serologic markers. D recommendation. The USPSTF found no evidence that screening for pancreatic cancer is effective in reducing mortality. There is a potential for significant harm because of the very low prevalence of pancreatic cancer , limited accuracy of available screening tests, the invasive nature of diagnostic tests, and the poor outcomes of treatment. As a result, the USPSTF concluded that the harms of screening for pancreatic cancer exceed any potential benefits. Clinical Considerations • Because of the poor prognosis of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer , there is an interest in primary prevention. The evidence ...

167 Burden of Suffering Cancer of the pancreas is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., accounting for an estimated 27,000 deaths in 1995 (8.4 deaths/100,000 persons). 1,1a Worldwide, the age-adjusted incidence and mortality of pancreatic cancer have been increasing since the 1930s, 2,3 al- though in the U.S. these rates have declined since the early 1970s. 1,1a In- cidence rates may be overestimated, because an important proportion of pancreatic cancer diagnoses (as many as half in some studies) are not his- tologically confirmed. 4 Pancreatic cancer is more common in men, blacks, cigarette smokers, and older persons (the majority of cases being diag- nosed between ages 65 and 79). 1,2,3,5 The risk of pancreatic cancer is in- creased in patients with diabetes, including those with long-standing ...

Incidence and Mortality Rate Trends In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer -related death in males and the fifth leading cause of cancer - related death in females. Because it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, the survival rate is poor compared to other types of cancer . Unfortunately, there has been little change in overall pancreatic cancer incidence or mortality rates throughout the past three decades. Compared to other racial and ethnic groups, African Americans are the most vulnerable to pancreatic cancer , followed by Whites. It is estimated that approximately $1.5 billion* is spent in the United States each year on treatment of pancreatic cancer . *In 2004 dollars, as reported in Brown ML, Riley GF, Schussler N, and Etzioni RD. 24 Abstract 12 Sunday 09.00 Smoking and pancreatic cancer : Animal models of pancreatic dysfunction Parimal Chowdhury There is strong evidence in the literature linking cigarette smoking with pancreatic diseases. Smoking related deaths in the United States exceed 400,000 per year. Report of the Surgeon General published in 2004 showed that an increased risk for pancreatic cancer in smokers occurs as compared to lifetime non-smokers. We believe that the development of pancreatic cancer in smokers predisposes to the induction of pancreatitis like episode and nicotine, an addictive component in the cigarette smoke, enhances this process. In an effort to understand the mechanism by which nicotine induces this process we have conducted experiments in both in-vivo animal and in in-vitro cell culture models. For in-vivo experimentation we have exposed the Male Adult Sprague Dawley rats to nicotine ...

This possible connection is supported by evidence from studies conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory and other studies of nuclear workers at other sites who have been exposed to ionizing radiation. The National Research Council’s, on the other hand, has determined that the pancreas is relatively insensitive to ionizing radiation. Pancreatic cancers are designated as “specified” cancers under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. Historically, incidence of pancreatic cancer in ...

Capsaicin Shows Promise In Inhibiting Growth Of Pancreatic Cancer As of May 1/06 the evidence is in that capsaicin also is useful in coping with and even preventing prostae cancer . - CW ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Croft Woodruff < croftwoodruff@telus.net > Date: Apr 10, 2006 11:35 AM Subject: Capsaicin Shows Promise In Inhibiting Growth Of Pancreatic Cancer To: croft.woodruff@gmail.com Comment: Capsaicin stimulates digestion - particularly production of hydrochloric acid. The latter is essential to ionize minerals and hydrolyze protein fibre into chains of amino acids (peptides) that are then easily split into individual amino acids that are essential for the transport of minerals (as neutral amino acid mineral chelates) from the small intestine into the blood. Lack of HCL stimulates over production of the pancreatic enzyme trypsin to the point ...

Doan, Changyi Chen, Qizhi Yao Introduction : Cancer cells have been shown to evade immune surveillance through inhibition of dendritic cell (DC) function, thereby suppressing immune responses to tumor- associated antigens. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of soluble factors released by pancreatic cancer cells on DC differentiation and activation. The change in signal transduction pathways induced by the above factors was also studied to elucidate the mechanism of immune suppression in pancreatic cancer . Methods : DCs were derived from human peripheral blood CD14 + monocytes in presence of GM-CSF plus IL-4 for 5 days (differentiation) and TNF-a for ...

Its shape is often described as a long fish, because it is wide at one end (commonly referred to as the “head” of the pancreas) and narrow at the other (the “tail”). Overall, it is about six inches long and two inches wide. The pancreas is very complex, functioning as two separate glands ( exocrine and endocrine ) inside the same organ. The vast majority of pancreatic cells function as exocrine glands and ducts. The exocrine glands make pancreatic juice, which contains enzymes that break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates ...
