PDF [77,9 KB]  From [www.mass.gov]  Last viewed: 13.07.2004
RISK FACTOR INFORMATION FOR SELECTED CANCER TYPES Source: Community Assessment Unit, Bureau of Environmental Health Assessment, Massachusetts Department of Public Health July, 2001 Pancreatic Cancer The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 29,200 people in the U.S. (14,200 men and 15,000 women) will develop pancreatic cancer in 2001. This disease accounts for approximately 2% of all new cases of cancer in both men and women, but between 5% and 6% of all cancer deaths (ACS, 2001). This discrepancy has been attributed to detection of pancreatic cancer at an advanced stage and the short median survival time for this cancer of approximately three months. Between 1920 and 1965, mortality from this disease increased nearly 200% from 2.9 to 8.2 per 100,000 people. These increases are believed to be due, in part, to improved diagnosis during this time period ...

The Board of Directors for the Wayne Fusaro Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (WFPCRF) recently provided continued support for the research laboratory of David C. Whitcomb, MD PhD at the University of Pittsburgh. The WFPCRF contributed $25,000 to support Dr. Whitcomb’s pancreatic cancer genetics research. Wayne Fusaro fell victim to pancreatic cancer in July 2000 after a short 28-day illness. He was only 51 years old. His wife, Jill, has since founded the WFPCRF in his memory. Wayne is also the father of three children: Dana is the mother of one, Ashley, and works at Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield; Gina works at PNC Bank; and Tony works at UniFirst. Wayne was the Assistant County Manager for Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County. He enjoyed volunteering for many organizations, and the WFPCRF strives to continue his charitable work. Incidence and Mortality Rate Trends In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer -related death in males and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in females. Because it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, the survival rate is poor compared to other types of cancer . Unfortunately, there has been little change in overall pancreatic cancer incidence or mortality rates throughout the past three decades. Compared to other racial and ethnic groups, African Americans are the most vulnerable to pancreatic cancer , followed by Whites. It is estimated that approximately $709 million* is spent in the United States each year on treatment of pancreatic cancer . *In 1996 dollars, as determined by Brown, Riley, Schussler, and Etzioni and reported in the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Progress ...

Schwarz, Roderich E. “Targeting TGFbeta in Pancreatic Cancer ” [We plan to test a new and unique approach to treatment of pancreatic cancer by blocking the receptor activity of TGFß, which in several different ways helps the cancer cells to grow.] Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, and only 4% of people affected with it do survive 5 years. Pancreatic cancers have a high rate of genetic changes that affect the function of transforming growth factor beta (TGFß); TGFß is the main downregulator of cell growth in gland-like or duct-lining cells, from which pancreatic cancer cells are derived. The majority of these cancer cells lack one or more proteins which mediate the TGFß signal within the cell, so that its break-like effect on cell growth is lost. In addition, more than half of pancreatic cancer cells ...

ORIGINAL REPORTS Current Status of Gene Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer Pedro J. Rami´rez, MD,* and Selwyn M. Vickers, MD* † *Department of Surgery and the † Gene Therapy Program, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama Pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains a widespread and difficult disease to treat. Surgical resection offers the possibility of cure in a select few. However, most patients are not eligible, and con- ventional chemotherapy and radiation remain largely ineffec- tive. Despite this, our understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease has advanced considerably over the past few decades. These findings provide the basis for the development of much needed new therapeutic modalities. Specifically, the application of new recombinant DNA technology and techniques to pan- creatic cancer has yielded promising results. ...

Smokeless and Other Noncigarette Tobacco Use and Pancreatic Cancer : A Case-Control Study Based on Direct Interviews Juan Alguacil and Debra T. Silverman Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. National Cancer Institute, NIH, Department of Health and Human Services, Bethesda, Maryland Abstract Cigarette smoking is an important and well-established cause of pancreatic cancer . In contrast, little is known about the effects of smoking cigars, pipes, and use of smokeless tobacco on pancreatic cancer risk. The objective of the present study was to examine the association between noncigarette tobacco use ( i.e., cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco) and pancreatic cancer risk among nonsmokers of cigarettes. A population-based case-control study of pancreatic cancer was conducted during 1986 –1989 among residents of Atlanta, ...
