Pancreatic Cancer
By Ronald Steriti, NMD, PhD
Overview
Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. The
American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that 29,000 Americans died from pancreatic cancer in
1998. Conventional medicine's inability to effectively treat pancreatic cancer is evidenced by
survival rates of only 18% at 1 year and 4% at 5 years - one of the poorest 5-year survival rates
of any cancer . The tumor results in the death of more than 98% of afflicted patients.
The pancreas can be divided into two basic parts, the exocrine and endocrine pancreas. Each has
a different function. The exocrine pancreas produces juices ( pancreatic enzymes) that help break
down and digest food. The endocrine pancreas produces hormones (such as insulin) that regulate
how the body stores and uses food. About 95% of pancreatic ...

Resection for Malignancy. Effects on
Bowel Function and Quality of Life

General Hospital, UK
We have investigated long term survivors after pancreatectomy to determine whether
specific dietary assessment and advice can improve gastrointestinal symptoms, bowel
function and quality of life.
Ten patients (7 men, median (range) age 61 (50–75) yr) were studied 16 (6–46)
months after resection for malignancy, and after exclusion of recurrence by computed
tomography. Detailed symptom enquiry, quality of life assessment (QoL) and dietary
history were performed. All patients completed a 1 week weighed food dietary intake
survey. Detailed advice was offered and patients were reassessed 8 weeks ...

The Board of Directors for the Wayne Fusaro Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (WFPCRF)
recently provided continued support for the research laboratory of David C. Whitcomb, MD PhD
at the University of Pittsburgh. The WFPCRF contributed $25,000 to support Dr. Whitcomb’s
pancreatic cancer genetics research.
Wayne Fusaro fell victim to pancreatic cancer in July 2000 after a short 28-day illness. He was
only 51 years old. His wife, Jill, has since founded the WFPCRF in his memory. Wayne is also
the father of three children: Dana is the mother of one, Ashley, and works at Highmark Blue
Cross/Blue Shield; Gina works at PNC Bank; and Tony works at UniFirst.
Wayne was the Assistant County Manager for Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County. He enjoyed
volunteering for many organizations, and the WFPCRF strives to continue his charitable work.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2) is one member of the erbB family of transmembrane tyrosine kinases.
HER2 signaling is associated with enhanced breast cancer cell proliferation. The aims of this study are to investigate if
HER2 in human prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer cells is a molecular target of a new treatment with targeted alpha
therapy (TAT) for metastatic cancer using the humanized monoclonal antibody, Herceptin.
Human prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3, DU145 and LNCaP-LN-3), breast cancer cell lines (BT-474 and SK-BR-3) and
pancreatic cancer cell lines (CAPAN-1, CFPAN-1 and PANC-1) were ...

ABSTRACT
Diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium sp is frequent in patients with AIDS, but involvement of other organs of the digestive
tract is uncommon. We report a case of Cryptosporidium -associated obstruction of the biliary tract mimicking cancer of the
head of the pancreas in a 43-year-old woman with AIDS.
