NEWS FROM THE 2005 ASCO ANNUAL MEETING
Lymph nodes are tiny, bean-
shaped glands that help fight infec-
tion. When cancer cells start to
spread to other parts of the body,
they first go to the lymph nodes.
During stomach cancer surgery,
doctors remove a number of these
lymph nodes and examine them
for evidence of cancer . The more
lymph nodes that are removed and
examined, the more certain a doc-
tor can be about how far the can-
cer has spread. This information
helps determine the stage (descrip-
tion) of the cancer and guides treat-
ment decisions. In 1997, the
American Joint Committee on
Cancer (AJCC) determined that
15 lymph nodes should be removed
and assessed in people having
stomach cancer surgery.
In this study, investigators ana- ...

Tularemia with peritonitis developed in a 50-year-old
man soon after diagnosis of stomach cancer with metasta-

16S rDNA. The infection resolved with antimicrobial treat-

peared after chemotherapy-associated lymphopenia.
Case Study

Frequently asked questions about cancer
of the stomach
You have recently had some tests that tell us that you have a cancer
in your stomach . We hope this information will help answer some of
your questions – if you have any concerns and worries, please do not
hesitate to ask us. We want you to understand what is happening so
you can make informed decisions about what we do next for you.
Where is the stomach and what does it do?
The stomach is a J-shaped ‘bag’, which acts as a temporary storage
area for any food and drink that you eat. It lies just below the
diaphragm in your abdomen (tummy) and is next to your liver, gall
bladder, spleen and pancreas. From above it, in the chest, the
oesophagus (gullet) squeezes food ...

stomach cancer
L.J. Schouten, Comprehensive Cancer Centre
Limburg / Comprehensive Cancer Centre East
Introduction Cancers of the stomach and oesophagus are fairly
common malignancies. Worldwide, cancer of the stomach is the second
most and cancer of the oesophagus the ninth most common form of cancer
[1]. Since before the Second World War the incidence and mortality rates of
stomach cancer have been declining [2,3]. In contrast, the incidence rates of
cancer of the lower third of the oesophagus and of the cardia of the
stomach have increased significantly over the last two decades [4].
There is great geographical variation in the incidence of oesophagus
cancer , with some well defined areas of high incidence near the Caspian
Sea in Kazakhstan and Iran, in Brittany (France) ...

Stomach cancer is the second leading cause

However, incidence and mortality rates for
stomach cancer are lower in the United States
