Cancer in Northern Ireland 1993 - 2001: A Comprehensive Report 17
4: Cancer of the Stomach (C16)
Incidence
In 2001, stomach cancer was the sixth most common cancer in males and the tenth commonest in
females. On average, 157 males and 101 females were diagnosed as having stomach cancer each
year 1993-2001, accounting for about 3% of male and 2% of female cancers registered.
Age
The median age at diagnosis was 71 years for males and 75 years for females. Given the levels of
disease in 2001, the risk of getting stomach cancer was 1 in 69 for males and 1 in 161 for females
(Table 4a). The number of new cases increased with age up to 70-74 years for males and 80-84
years for females, with the age-specific rates consistently higher in males than females (Figure 4a).
Prevalence
In Northern Ireland on 31st December 2001 there were 260 males and 171 females alive ...

Regular Use of Aspirin Is Associated with Reduced Risk of Stomach Cancer
Introduction
Stomach cancer , also known as gastric cancer , is a malignant tumor in any part of the stomach . Globally, stomach cancer is the fourth most common cancer with an estimated 876,300 new patients in the year 2000, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths according to the World Health Organization statistics. In Hong Kong in the year 2000, there were 1,078 confirmed stomach cancer patients, making it the seventh most common cancer . A total of 652 patients had died of stomach cancer , making it the fourth most common cause of cancer ...

Abstract. CDX2, a transcriptional factor expressed in the
intestine, is implicated in the development and maintenance
of the intestinal mucosa. Recent studies have demonstrated
that CDX2 is expressed in the intestinal metaplasia of the
stomach and intestinal-type gastric cancer , while it is not
expressed in the normal gastric mucosa. To investigate the role
of CDX2 in gastric cancer , we determined CDX2 expression
and cell proliferation rate in various types of gastric cancer
tissues by immunostaining. Surgically dissected gastric cancer
tissues were collected from 40 patients. Consistent with
previous reports, CDX2 was expressed in most gastric mucosa
samples with intestinal metaplasia (89%, 16/18), although it
was not found in the adjacent normal mucosa. CDX2
expression was also detected in 64% (18/28) of intestinal-
type gastric cancer cases, whereas it was not observed in the ...

A complaint was made by Mrs A that her GP did not provide services of an appropriate

investigation the GP did not order any further investigations, although Mrs A continued
to complain of abdominal pain and vomiting; (2) that the GP did not refer her for
specialist assessment when her symptoms continued and her general health deteriorated;

the GP did not discuss with her the option of gastroscopy.

triggered by the bacterium

Patients with IBD, including

Peritonitis in
Stomach Cancer
Patient
Xiang Y. Han,* Linus X. Ho,* and Amar Safdar*
Tularemia with peritonitis developed in a 50-year-old
man soon after diagnosis of stomach cancer with metasta-
sis. The ascites grew Francisella tularensis subsp. holarc-
tica , which was identified by sequencing analysis of the
16S rDNA. The infection resolved with antimicrobial treat-
ment. Antibodies detected 4 weeks after onset disap-
peared after chemotherapy-associated lymphopenia.
Case Study
A 50-year-old man arrived at the emergency depart-
ment in September 2003 with a 2-day history of high fever
(temperature up to 40.8°C), rigors, dry cough, nausea,
vomiting, lower abdominal pain, and melena. The patient
had recently been diagnosed with signet-ring–cell carcino-

Risk of stomach cancer associated with 12
workplace hazards: analysis of death certificates
from 24 states of the United States with the aid of
job exposure matrices
Pierluigi Cocco, Mary H Ward, Mustafa Dosemeci
Abstract
Objective —To investigate the risk of gas-
tric cancer associated with 12 workplace
exposures suspected or discussed as aetio-
logical agents in previous reports.
Methods —A case-control study was con-
ducted based on the death certificates of
several million deaths in 24 states of the
United States in 1984–96. Overall, the data
base included 41 957 deaths from stomach
cancer among subjects aged > 25 years.
These were 20 878 white men, 14 125 white
women, 4215 African American men, and
2739 African American women. Two con-
trols for each case were selected from
among subjects who died from non- ...
