Introduction
Testicular cancer (TC) affects men in a period of life when intimate relationships, star-
ting a family, and career are major concerns. Since the introduction of cisplatin-based
chemotherapy in the late 1970s, TC has become one of the most curable malignancies,
with cure rates between 85 and 90% [1;2]. As a consequence, the majority ...

Testicular Cancer and
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
Evidence varies on whether there may be an connection between testicular cancer
and exposure to ionizing radiation. This connection is supported by some evidence from studies
of nuclear workers in England who have been exposed to ionizing radiation. The National
Research Council’s, on the other hand, has determined that the testis are relatively insensitive to
ionizing radiation. Testicular cancer is not designated as a “specified” cancer under the Energy

Current Status of Retroperitoneal Lymph Node
Dissection and Testicular Cancer :
When to Operate
Richard Foster, MD, and Richard Bihrle, MD
Background: Historically, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) has been used in the therapy of
both low-stage and high-stage testicular cancer after chemotherapy. As other therapies have developed, the role
of RPLND has also evolved.
Methods: The authors review the current indications for RPLND in the therapy of testicular cancer .
Results: Metastatic testicular cancer can be cured in 50% to 75% of cases by surgical removal using RPLND,
depending on the volume of metastasis. In postchemotherapy disease, the surgical removal of teratoma or
carcinoma also confers a therapeutic benefit to the patient.
Conclusions: The therapeutic capability of RPLND in low-stage testicular cancer is underappreciated. In
postchemotherapy ...

—————————————————————————————————————
—————————————————————————————————————
Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in young
men between the ages of 15 and 35.
Risk Factors
The causes of testicular cancer are unknown. However, studies
show that several factors increase a man’s risk for developing tes-
ticular cancer , including:
• An undescended testicle (cryptorchidism). Men with an
undescended testicle are at greater risk, even if surgery is per-
formed to place the testicle in the scrotum.
• Abnormal testicular development

TESTICULAR CANCER
What Is Cancer ?
Cancer is a group of many related diseases. All forms of cancer involve out-of-control growth
and spread of abnormal cells.
Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a
person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that,
normal cells of most tissues divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries.
Cancer cells, however, continue to grow and divide, and can spread to other parts of the body.
These cells accumulate and form tumors (lumps) that may compress, invade, and destroy normal
tissue. If cells break away from such a tumor, they can travel through the bloodstream, or the
lymph system to other areas of the body. There, they may settle and form "colony" tumors. In
their new location, the cancer cells continue growing. The spread of a tumor to a new ...

BASIC INFORMATION
DESCRIPTION
Uncontrolled growth of malignant cells in the testicle.
There are several types of testicular cancer , some more
dangerous than others. This is the most common form
of cancer in young men. Affects all ages, but more often
is found in men ages 20-40.
FREQUENT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
• A firm swelling in one testicle discovered by accident
or by self-examination.
• No pain (90% of cases).
• Sense of fullness in the scrotum.
CAUSES
Unknown.
RISK INCREASES WITH
• Undescended testicle(s) in infancy even if the testicle
was surgically moved into the scrotum.
• Caucasian race.
• Estrogen administration to the mother during preg-

Testicular Cancer
What is Testicular Cancer ?
Testicular Cancer is a cancer in one or both testicles that usually occurs between the ages of fifteen (15) and
forty (40). Statistics show that 95% of testicular tumors begin in cells within the testicles. It can be treated and
cured, when detected at an early stage. Most men discover a lump themselves. A man should talk with his
medical doctor, if he notices anything unusual about his testicles between regular checkups.
Anatomy. The testicles, also called testes, are a pair of male sex glands. They produce sperm and male
hormones. The testicles are located under the penis in a sac-like pouch called the scrotum.
Risk Factors
A man is at risk if:
•
his testicle did not move down into the scrotum.
•
he had surgery to move the testicle down into the scrotum.
•
he had previous testicular cancer . ...

Cancer of the testicles, the primary male sex
glands, accounts for only about 1 percent of
all cancers in men. It is, though, the most
common type of cancer in males aged 20 to
35, but can occur in other age groups. It
strikes about 5,000 males a year. Often, only
one testicle is affected.
The cause of testicular cancer is not
known. Risk factors, though, have been
given. These are :
• Undescended testicles (that are not cor-
rected) in infants and young children.
(Parents should see that their infant boys
are checked at birth for undescended tes-
ticles.)
• A family history of testicular cancer
• Having an identical twin with tes-
ticular cancer
• Injury to the scrotum
Testicular cancer is almost always curable if
it is found and treated early. Surgery is done
to remove the testicle. Other things can
further ...
