Thyroid Cancer and other Thyroid Diseases and
Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
Summary:
Strong evidence has been recorded of a possible connection between thyroid
cancer and exposure to ionizing radiation. This evidence is based upon studies conducted at Los
Alamos National Laboratory, studies of nuclear workers at other sites, and others exposed to
ionizing radiation. These findings are consistent with the National Research Council’s
determination that the thyroid is sensitive to ionizing radiation. Thyroid cancer is designated as a

Carcinoma of the thyroid gland is an uncommon malignancy, accounting for
approximately 1% of total cancer cases in developed countries (WCR 2003). In areas not
associated with nuclear fallout (how do you define this, or do list them), the annual
incidence of thyroid cancer ranges between 2.0-3.8 cases per 100,000 in women and 1.2-
2.6 per 100,000 in men, women of childbearing age being at highest risk. Low figures are

19 Cancer of the thyroid
Summary
Relative survival after diagnosis of thyroid cancer is high, when compared with other cancer
sites. During 1992–1997, relative survival one year after diagnosis of cancer of the thyroid
was 91.2% for males and 96.4% for females. Five-year relative survival was 87.9% for males
and 95.6% for females (Table 19.1). Survival ten years after diagnosis was 79.8% for males
and 92.2% for females in 1987–1991, the most recent period for which ten-year relative
survival data are available (Figure 19.2; Tables 19.2 and 19.3).
Between 1982–1986 and 1992–1997, relative survival for females increased significantly with
five-year relative survival increasing from 87.8% to 95.6%. For males the only significant
increase was for relative survival three years after diagnosis, from 83.2% to 89.6%
(Figure 19.2; Tables 19.2 and 19.3).

THYROID CANCER
MEDICAL APPENDIX
DEFINITION
1
Thyroid nodules are common with a spectrum ranging from benign to malignant.
Some nodules are true benign adenomas and others are definite carcinomas but
between these many nodules are potentially malignant and the precise relationship
between benign and malignant nodules is speculative. Although relatively rare,
accounting for less than 1% of new malignancies annually in Britain, thyroid cancer is
the most common type of endocrine malignancy. Cancers of the thyroid are usually
classified into the following histological groups:
• Papillary carcinoma
• Follicular carcinoma
• Medullary carcinoma
• Anaplastic carcinoma

Malignancies of other tissues may also occur in the thyroid gland:

ABSTRACT
Thyroxine (T4) withdrawal or recombinant TSH is used for the stimulation of
thyroglobulin (Tg), whole-body scanning (WBS) and iodine-131 treatment
in patients with thyroid carcinoma. This study evaluated the T4 dose
reduction protocol as an alternative for patients’ preparation. Fifty-one
patients were submitted to total T4 withdrawal for WBS and Tg measure-
ment. T4 treatment was then resumed and maintained until TSH reached
levels = 0.3 mIU/l. The T4 dose was then decreased to 0.8 µg/kg/day and
TSH was measured weekly. Tg was assayed when TSH was > 30 mIU/l.
Patients diagnosed with the disease upon initial evaluation were treated.
We also evaluated the clinical and laboratory changes observed for
both preparations. Using the reduced dose protocol, TSH levels > 30 mIU/l
were reached within 6 and 8 weeks in 84.6 and 100% of ...

Abstract
Disorders in myocardium metabolism taking place at heart failure are connected with reduced blood supply
and promote decrease of ATP production, breaking of oxygen consumption, increase of lactate and hydrogen
ions' production. In this connection study of changes of partial pressure of oxygen ions occurring in blood of
patients with systolic and diastolic forms of heart failure seems to be of great interest. On the basis of obtained
results ...
