10 ENDOCRINE NEWS • NOVEMBER 2005 COVER STORY: TRI-POINT SERIES The incidence of thyroid cancer has been rising gradually over the past decade. After initial treat- ment with thyroidectomy, usually followed by adjuvant radioiodine ablation and thyroid hormone suppressive therapy, most patients will be cured and remain cancer free. However, persistent or recur- rent disease is not uncommon. Drs. Tuttle and Mazzaferri discuss the rapidly evolving approaches to detect thyroid cancer recurrence, and the therapeutic challenges posed by the increased sensitivity of these new surveillance modalities. Current therapies are ineffective for those patients who have metastatic cancer unresponsive to surgery and radioiodine. Dr. Fagin discusses how the knowledge of the genetic origin of thyroid cancer is being used to design and test promising new therapies. From The Endocrine Society’s Research ...

PDF [96,4 KB]  From [www.thyroidcancer.com]  Last viewed: 07.09.2006
Thyroid Cancer Clinic - Papillary/Follicular Cancer Papillary/Follicular Cancer Papillary/Follicular Cancer : Papillary and follicular cancer , or carcinoma, account for about 80-85% of all thyroid malignancies. They get their names from their appearance under the microscope. Some are pure papillary, some are purely follicular in nature, and some are mixed, that is, both types of cancer cells may be present in the same tumor. In fact, some of these tumors are actually referred to as “follicular variant of papillary carcinoma”. The important thing to understand is that 1) the typical forms of these cancers are quite curable in a very large percentage of cases and, 2) they behave in somewhat dissimilar ways, and affect slightly different age groups, though there are often exceptions to the rule. Papillary carcinoma is more common in the younger age groups, though ...

Reference Section a report by Er nest L Mazzaferri , MD , MACP President-Elect, American Thyroid Association (ATA) Types and Basic Biologic Features of Thyroid Cancer Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. It comprises several distinct tumor types; including papillary thyroid cancer (PTC); follicular thyroid cancer (FTC); and Hürthle cell thyroid cancer (HTC), which are tumors of the thyroid follicular cell derived from the embryonic foregut. They ordinarily concentrate iodine and sometimes synthesize and secrete thyroid hormone, and for this reason are collectively referred to as differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC).The three tumor types represent 80%, 11%, and 3% of all thyroid cancers, respectively, and have 10-year mortality ...

187 Burden of Suffering Thyroid cancer accounts for an estimated 14,000 new cancer cases and more than 1,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. 1 The annual incidence is about 4/100,000 population. 2 Women account for 77% of new cases and 61% of deaths. 1 Current overall 5-year survival with treatment is 95% in whites and 90% in blacks, 1 but is much lower with some histologic types (e.g., medullary, anaplastic). 3–5 Among those at substantially increased risk for thyroid cancer are persons exposed to external upper body (especially head and neck) irradiation during infancy or childhood, and individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) syndrome. 6–10 The risk of radiation-induced thyroid nodu- larity and cancer increases with radiation dose ...

THYROID Volume 11, Number 8, 2001 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. Susceptibility of Thyroid Cancer Cells to 7-Hydroxystaurosporine–Induced Apoptosis Correlates with Bcl-2 Protein Level Su He Wang, Ellen Phelps, Saho Utsugi, and James R. Baker, Jr. 7-Hydroxystaurosporine (UCN-01) is a selective protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor and is being developed as a novel anticancer agent. Because of reports that PKC may be involved in the pathogenesis of some forms of thy- roid cancers, we examined four thyroid carcinoma lines (FRO, KAT5, NPA, and WRO). These cells were found to have different susceptibility to UCN-01 treatment, and there appeared to be a correlation between UCN- 01–induced death and expression levels of endogenous Bcl-2. KAT5 cells, which normally express a low amount of Bcl-2, exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to UCN-01–induced death than the other cell lines. Of inter- est, susceptibility ...

National Cancer Institute SEER Program 120 THYROID T iny and usually insignificant carcinomas can be found in five to 10% or more of all thyroid glands that are carefully examined under the microscope at autopsy, but relatively few of them grow or spread to produce symptoms that lead to their detection during a person’s lifetime. The thyroid cancers that are diagnosed each year represent about 1% of all cancers in the U.S. population. Most types of thyroid cancer rank quite high in terms of successful treatment and long term survival. However, some rare subtypes may have a poor prognosis. The highest incidence rates for thyroid cancer in the SEER regions occur in women, particularly in the Pacific Island and Southeast Asian populations living in California and Hawaii. The rates are highest among Filipino women (14.6 per ...
