Beginning this week, women in Medicine Hat and area will receive regular letters from the Alberta Cancer Board to encourage them to receive annual cervical cancer screening tests, or Pap smears. Cervical cancer is a serious health issue. Between 1990 and 1999, over 1,300 Alberta women were diagnosed with cervical cancer , and almost 400 of those women died. This disease is almost completely preventable through regular Pap test screening. Yet, over half of the women ...

enrollees irrespective of their ethnicity. A timely detection of cancer through screening may also help in containing the costs that would otherwise have been incurred if the cancer was detected at a later stage. The total estimated direct and indirect costs associated with breast cancer in the United States are between $2.35 billion and $3.13 billion, and about $ 2 billion of this is for late-stage breast cancer treatment. 14 With more than a 13% probability of a woman developing invasive breast cancer in her lifetime, 15 it is important that pharmacists assume a professional and direct responsibility in the effort to inform women of this risk. Ethnic and language barriers should be overcome in this education effort. A. 2 Uppsala University, Sweden 3 Civil Aviation University of China, China Abstract Ultra-wideband (UWB) Microwave imaging (MWI) is a promising breast cancer detection technology which exploits the significant contrast in dielectric properties between normal breast tissue and tumor. Previously, data-independent methods, such as delay-and-sum (DAS) and space-time (ST) beamforming, have been used for microwave imaging. However, the low resolution and the poor interference suppression capability associated ...

German study finds MRI superior for breast cancer detection in high-risk women 6/3/03 By: Edward Susman CHICAGO - German researchers continue to champion MRI screening over conventional mammography for women who are at high risk for breast cancer , according to a presentation Monday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting. A major benefit of MR is that it avoids exposing these women -- who may be BRCA1 or BRCA2 carriers -- to ionizing radiation, which could increase the mutation of already compromised genomes, said lead investigator Dr. Christiane Kuhl from the University of Bonn. In addition, MRI appears to be far more sensitive than conventional mammography or high-resolution sonography. "MRI offered -- by far -- the highest sensitivity for diagnosing familial breast cancer , and at the same time had the lowest rate of unnecessary biopsies," said Kuhl, who is an associate ...

Introduction The past year has been a confusing one for women and physicians in the United States regarding recommendations for breast cancer screening. In November 1993, the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society (ACS) ap- proved a resolution reaffirming its guide- lines for breast cancer detection including the guidelines related to screening in women aged 40 to 49 years. This action was prompted by notification by the Na- tional Cancer Institute (NCI) of plans to modify its recommendations on breast cancer screening, which formerly had been identical to those of the ACS. The ACS guidelines for early breast cancer detection are summarized in the Table. These guidelines are intended for aver- age risk, asymptomatic women. The NCI subsequently did alter its guidelines. The most significant change was to omit any recommendation for ...

Lung CAD Offers Promise in Better Cancer Detection April 1, 2006 By Cheryl Hall Harris, RN With early diagnosis the only way to beat lung cancer , lung CAD is focused on finding tumors of 2 to 8 millimeters or more imaged via chest CT or analog or digital x-ray. While it’s too early to say if lung CAD will be successful in bringing better outcomes for lung cancer patients — it is beginning to m a k e i t s m a r k . The challenges of detecting lung cancer at a very early stage are formidable, but the urgency propels the development of tools for early detection . The prognosis for surviving beyond five years is abysmal — 9 to 12 percent — for patients who are diagnosed with more advanced stages of this disease. The National Cancer Institute released a report in August 2005 detailing ...

In earlier studies, a urine test for PCA3 appeared to have greater specificity for CaP than the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) assay. We performed a clinical evaluation of an improved prototype PCA3 assay, following 2 years of pre-clinical assay refinement. Methods: 147 male outpatients (ages 27-92 y.o.) were subjects of the study. Subjects were grouped as follows (see chart): post-radical prostatectomy, normal <45 y.o., benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), untreated CaP. Diagnosis of BPH or CaP was ...

Source: Pennsylvania’s HealthyWoman Program (HWP) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Breast Cancer Rates for breast cancer for both white and black women have been on the increase. The latest Pennsylvania Cancer and Incidence and Mortality Report, issued June 2005 (data from 2002) lists 9,672 invasive cases of breast cancer diagnosed among Pennsylvania women. For the first time during the ten-year period from 1993-2002 the annual age adjusted incidence rate was higher for blacks compared to whites. The 1998-2002 average annual age-adjusted death rate among black females was nearly 44 percent higher than the rate for whites (39.3 and 27.3 per 100,000). The annual mortality rate for 2002 among all females was 27.6 per 100,000 and was the second lowest rate recorded during the ten-year period of 1993- 2002. Age-adjusted death rates for white females showed an overall ...

Abstract— Breast cancer detection techniques have been reported to aid radiologists in analyzing mammograms. We note that most techniques are performed on uncompressed digital mammograms. Mammogram images are huge in size necessitating the use of compression to reduce storage/transmission requirements. In this paper, we present an algorithm for the detection of microcalcifications in the JPEG2000 domain. The algorithm is based on the statistical properties of the wavelet transform that the JPEG2000 coder employs. Simulation results were carried out at different compression ratios. The sensitivity of this algorithm ranges from 92% with a false positive rate of 4.7 down to 66% with a false positive rate of 2.1 using lossless compression and lossy compression at a compression ratio of 100:1, respectively. Keywords— Breast cancer , JPEG2000, mammography, microcalcifications. ...

Cancer Screening and Early Detection As medical technology and research advances continue at the University of Pennsylvania and other institutions, the benefits of cancer screenings have become increasingly apparent. Cancer prevention starts with ongoing screening and is a powerful way for individuals to take control of their health. Screening also enables doctors to diagnose a cancer in its early stages, often before symptoms occur, which can greatly improve the patient’s potential for a cure. In addition to mammograms, pap tests, and colonoscopies, new screening techniques are improving cancer prevention . Melanoma Screening According to The American Cancer Society, the incidence rate for melanoma in the United States has more than doubled since 1973 to an estimated 62,190 new cases in 2006 alone. Yet, if detected early ...
