Reporting of Cancer Stage at Diagnosis
The percentage of new cases being reported with stage data by cancer centres rose from 67%
in 2001 to 89% in 2005. Stage data are not currently reported for patients treated outside of
Ontario's cancer centres.
Goal
As of this report
Reporting of cancer stage at diagnosis
What's new this year?
This report presents new 2005 data for cancer centre stage reporting and new 2004 data for
population-based reporting.
The data have also been re-drawn to show activity by local health integration network (LHIN).
NOTE: The establishment of the LHINs began in mid 2005. These statistics represent a re-drawing of
pre-2005 activity based on regional cancer centres and therefore do not yet reflect performance in
LHIN-based health systems.

With the availability of new technologies and the
increased interest of medical practitioners to use
molecular biomarkers in early detection and diagnosis ,
and in the prediction of therapeutic treatment efficacy
and clinical outcomes, the academic and research
institutions, as well as the pharmaceutical industry,
have increased their efforts to develop novel molecular
biomarkers for several human diseases, including
cancer . The identification of molecular biomarkers
also enables the development of a new generation of
diagnostic products and to integrate diagnostics and
therapeutics. This integrated approach will aid in
‘individualizing’ the medical practice. Here, we
address issues related to the development of

Abstract:
Precise classification of tumors is critical for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Diagnostic
pathology has traditionally relied on macro and microscopic histology and tumor
morphology as the basis for tumor classification. Current classification frameworks,
however, are unable to discriminate among tumors with similar histopathologic features,
which vary in clinical course and in response to treatment. In recent years, there has
been a move towards the use of cDNA microarrays for tumor classification. These high-
throughput assays provide relative mRNA expression measurements simultaneously for
thousands of genes. A key statistical task is to perform ...

F-FDG PET. Methods: Fifty-four breast cancer patients with
57 breast lesions underwent 2 sequential PET scans (dual-time-

calculated. All PET study results were correlated with follow-up
surgical pathology results. Results: Of the 57 breast lesions, 39

Abstract. X-ray mammography is the current clinical method for screen-
ing for breast cancer , and like any technique, has its limitations. Several
groups have reported differences in the X-ray scattering patterns of nor-

X-ray scatter analysis techniques may lead to a more accurate and cost
effective method of diagnosing beast cancer which lends itself ...

Polymers in Cells - A journey from fundamental polymer science to

Josef A. Käs

The physics of biological cells signifies the next fundamental challenge to soft matter physics since it
requires to create polymer physics for thermal nonequilibrium (an aspect which is usually only
considered in nonlinear dynamics) and to combine cutting edge techniques from nanosciences,
nonlinear optics, laser trapping and gene technology. Since all eukaryotic cells, depend in their
internal structure and organization on the cytoskeleton we particularly strive to understand the physics
of the cytoskeleton. Polymeric actin networks provide the rigidity for biological cells. We discovered
that molecular motors can significantly lower the stress relaxation time, effectively fluidizing an actin
gel. This result demonstrates that switch-able nano-sized ...

In patients with lung cancer , the frequency of and reasons for hospitalization following diagnosis have not been
adequately evaluated. Therefore, we assessed the clinical and financial aspects of hospital admissions in this
group of patients. All patients diagnosed with lung cancer at a community hospital over a 12-month period were
retrospectively reviewed for hospitalizations during the subsequent 18 months. Data were collected on demographics,
reasons for hospitalization, inpatient costs, and variance in utilization of inpatient services among oncologists.

Abstract- Breast cancer diagnosis has been ap-
proached by various machine learning techniques
for many years. This paper describes two neural
network based approaches to breast cancer diag-
nosis, both of which have displayed good general-
isation. The first approach is based on evolution-
ary artificial neural networks. In this approach,
a
feedforward neural network is evolved using an
evolutionary programming algorithm. Both the
weights and architectures (Le., connectivity of
the network) are evolved in the same evolution-
ary process. The network may grow as well as
shrink. The second approach is ...

there is significant backing, academically, to support this idea.
Conventional bio-medical science focuses exclusively on the pathological and biochemical
aspects of biology. This is an approach which works, but there is a deeper reality which
could yield significant diagnostic insights.

A LIFETIME’S SCIENTIFIC QUEST
INTRODUCTION
Nearly 30 years ago whilst working as a research doctor, working on the
development of the human tympanum, I became fascinated with the ideas of
some of the greatest embryologists of all time, mostly from Germany. Some
suggested that there was an unseen blueprint for any developing organism,
which was somehow followed by an unexplained mechanism, but in those
days, that was in the 1930s when these researchers were developing their
ideas, these ideas seemed to be taken for granted. I became captivated by
these ideas, and became interested in disciplines in medicine, or at that time
in the area of alternative medicine, which looked at ideas of unseen energies,
in order to diagnose and treat illness. This led me to Traditional Chinese
Medicine and acupuncture in particular, and to a number of visits to China,

Abstract
In breast cancer diagnosis ultrasound examination provides useful additional di-
agnostic information. However, conventional ultrasound imaging methods lack
both high spatial and temporal resolution. Therefore, During the reconstruction,
We use Ultrasound Computer Tomography (USCT) to get a high resolution im-
age, the object’s properties (e.g.different local sound speed and absorption) and
the sensor’s properties (e.g. the angle dependent efficiency) should be considered.
This thesis is concerning ultrasound computer tomography image reconstruction
regarding object and sensor properties. After the reconstruction, both spatial
and temporal resolution of the object image are improved. The algorithms are
implemented in Matlab and C++.

New Prostate Cancer Clinic Speeds Up Screening,
Diagnosis
A new clinic, opened in September by the Prostate Cancer Institute, is significantly reducing the time it
takes to confirm a prostate cancer diagnosis . Men have a one in six probability of developing prostate
cancer in their lifetimes, making it one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers.
The Rapid Access Clinic, the first of its kind in Canada for early prostate cancer detection, provides further
screening for the disease, the type of testing that would normally occur over the first few appointments
with a urologist. The service also reduces the time it takes patients to see a specialist, a step that can
account for up to thirty per cent of a patient’s overall wait, ...

Introduction:
Tumor M2-PK is the dimeric isoform of the
tetrameric glycolytic enzyme pyruvate kinase. It is
strongly overexpressed in tumor cells due to their
modified metabolic state. It can be quantified in
EDTA plasma with a commercially available
ELISA test kit. Recent reports indicate that Tumor
M2-PK is a marker for renal cell carcinoma and
lung cancer [1,2]. It has also been investigated in
pancreatic cancer and gastric cancer with
promising results [3]. This study was designed to
evaluate the use of this marker in gastrointestinal
cancer . Because elevation of tumor markers
sometimes can be observed in inflammatory
diseases, ...

The life sciences exploitation of X-rays has followed two distinct disciplines to date,
medical imaging and X-ray diffraction . These fields have developed independently of
each other with imaging reliant upon X-ray absorption in the object and diffraction
on its X-ray scattering properties.
The fundamental physical processes of
absorption and scattering always occur whenever X-rays traverse matter. However,
they have not, until recently, been viewed as possessing any complementary benefit.
Ironically, contemporary radiology depends upon efficient elimination of scattered X-
