reast cancer is the second lead-
ing cause of cancer death in the
world today, after lung cancer .
According to the World Health
Organization, more than one mil-
lion people were expected to be
diagnosed with breast cancer world-
wide in 2004.
1
In the UK, it is the
most common cancer in women,
with an estimated 1 in 12 women at
risk of developing the disease in
their lifetime,
2
and between 35 000
and 41 000 new cases each year.
As medicine enters the 21st cen-
tury, the field of breast cancer con-
tinues to reflect both our greatest
successes and our greatest chal-
lenges as scientists, epidemiologists
and clinicians. Discoveries in the
areas of breast cancer biology and
genetics continue to help us refine
our approach to the newly diag-
nosed patient, as well as guide our
development of cancer prevention ...

ABSTRACT
It is not uncommon for family members to thwart
a doctor’s attempt at disclosure of cancer diagnosis
to the patient. This stems from concern and love as
well as fear of the negative psychological impact of
such revelation. Indeed, collusion of this nature was
the norm in medical practice till the not too distant
past. ...

Smoking cessation following cancer diagnosis
Jamie L. Studts, PhD
James Graham Brown Cancer Center and University of Louisville School of Medicine
Louisville, Kentucky, USA
While most individuals accept that smoking increases risk for several types of cancer , the
benefits of smoking cessation following a cancer diagnosis are less commonly discussed.
Among individuals newly diagnosed with smoking-linked malignancies of the lung, head, and
neck, there are numerous incentives to quit smoking. Incentives include: (1) reduced risk of
second primary malignancies, (2) improved quality of life, (3) fewer treatment-related
symptoms, and (4) longer overall survival. Incentives to quit smoking exist for other
malignancy groups as well, including improved wound healing following surgery, as well as
cardiovascular, pulmonary, and overall physical functioning benefits. ...

In this demonstration, we introduce a system called GEMS (Gene Expression Model Selector) for the automated development
and evaluation of high-quality cancer diagnostic models and biomarker discovery from microarray gene expression data [1].
Traditional approaches to building such models (a) require specialized training in statistics, bioinformatics, or pattern recognition,

Missed Cancer Diagnosis
We present a malpractice case history to educate readers about the risks faced by practitioners and the
process of claims resolution.
The patient, who had a history of sinusitis and nasal congestion, complained of right-side facial pain and
swelling. After examining the area, Dr. X, a general dentist, told her the swelling she felt was an
underlying bony projection.
The dentist saw the patient on five subsequent occasions over the next year, each time reassuring her
about the pain and swelling. The patient also saw her regular physician during this period, but did not
communicate these complaints to him, as she thought her condition had been evaluated by her dentist.
Seventeen months later, the condition was diagnosed as adenoid cystic carcinoma.
The patient brought a lawsuit alleging that Dr. X was negligent in ...

Perceived Partner Reactions to Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer :
Impact on Psychosocial and Psychosexual Adjustment
Sarah R. Wimberly, Charles S. Carver, Jean-Philippe Laurenceau, Suzanne D. Harris, and Michael H. Antoni
University of Miami
Two studies examined breast cancer patients’ perceptions of their partners’ reactions to their diagnosis
and treatment as influences on 3 aspects of patients’ well-being: psychosexual adjustment, emotional
distress, and marital satisfaction. Study 1, cross-sectional, indicated that partner initiation of sex,
frequency of sex, a positive 1st sexual experience after treatment, and especially perception of the
partner’s emotional involvement in the relationship, were relevant to these outcomes. Study 2, longitu-
dinal, confirmed many of these findings in prospective tests across 1 year of recovery after surgery.
Partner involvement prospectively predicted all 3 outcomes. ...

“ Cancer biomarkers” constitutes one of the most rapidly
advancing fields in clinical diagnostics. They can be used
to screen asymptomatic individuals in the general
population, to assist in early and specific diagnosis in
suspect cases, to select patients who may benefit from
specific treatments, to predict prognosis and response
to therapy and finally to monitor patients after primary
therapy.
The introduction of advanced sophisticated
technologies like microarray, mass spectrometry and
automated DNA sequencing have opened new avenues
in the field of “ Cancer biomarkers”. But by this world
of mechanization, is light microscopy being lost in the

Automated cancer diagnosis based on
histopathological images: a systematic survey
Cigdem Demir and Bulent Yener
Abstract
In traditional cancer diagnosis , pathologists examine biopsies to make diagnostic assessments largely based on cell
morphology and tissue distribution. However, this is subjective and often leads to considerable variability. On the other
hand, computational diagnostic tools enable objective judgments by making use of quantitative measures. This paper
presents a systematic survey of the computational steps in automated cancer diagnosis based on histopathology. These
computational steps are: 1.) image preprocessing to determine the focal areas, 2.) feature extraction to quantify the
properties of these focal areas, and 3.) classifying the focal areas as malignant or not or identifying ...

CASE NOTE 02HDC08972: Missed early diagnosis of stomach cancer
Right to services of an appropriate standard – Reasonable care and skill – General
practitioner – Missed diagnosis – Cancer – Stomach – Peptic ulcer disease –
Investigations – Gastroscopy – Right 4
A complaint was made by Mrs A that her GP did not provide services of an appropriate
standard. The complaint was on the basis that (1) after a normal barium meal
investigation the GP did not order any further investigations, although Mrs A continued
to complain of abdominal pain and vomiting; (2) that the GP did not refer her for

A complaint was made by a consumer about the care she received from a general
practitioner. The complaint was on the basis that the general practitioner did not
adequately examine the consumer, did not diagnose ascites, and did not refer her for
further tests or assessment.

Abstract
With the introduction of several new modalities for the detection of breast cancer ,
it has become even more important to implement computer-aided diagnostic models to
help generate the best decisions from multiple tests, particularly when including
multimodal data sets such as a mammogram and gene expression profile. Decision
fusion provides a statistical model that can best combine information from multiple tests,
by taking into account the performance of each diagnostic as a detector of breast cancer .
To show this, the promoter methylation levels of five specific genes (proven biomarkers
of breast cancer ) were analyzed in 19 known tumor tissue samples ...

Diagnosis of prostate cancer
A fast and simple diagnosis of cancer decreases hospital care costs and permits
mass screening of populations, and thereby, earlier diagnoses. The need for such an
instrument exists in particular when it comes to diagnosing prostate cancer .The
appearance of prostate cancer has increased dramatically, and great amounts of
resources are being placed in treatment. Early diagnosis would be accompanied in
part by large economic savings for society and, in another part, would contribute
to improved life quality for patients whose treatment would be considerably more
merciful.
Working together, Imego AB and CanAg Diagnostic AB are developing a new
chip based analysis instrument for quantity detection of cancer . It will replace ...
